Weekend Update: Island Runner Girl

Good Afternoon Friends!!  I have so much to share with you since my last post – I can’t believe it’s been nearly three weeks since my Horse Capital Half Marathon Race Recap!

So much has happened in those three weeks, I hardly know where to begin.  The day after the Horse Cap Half, my youngest “graduated” from preschool and I completed my year as a preschool teacher the following week.  Several Java & Sole girls ran the local Athleta Women’s Trail Run over Memorial Day weekend, my older two wrapped up their 2nd grade year and I put the finishing touches on a brand new training plan for my Crazy Runner Girls that I can not wait to share with you!

All in time to pack our bags and head south for a week of fun in the sun with my family on my favorite island … just moments after my big kids got off the bus on their last day of school!  Whew!

Obviously I am not going to try to fit all of that into one post :)  So today’s Weekend Update with Tara at Running N Reading is really more of a Week-long Update!  Definitely check out her summer reading list when you get a chance.

Last  week I was truly in my happy place.  My parents started taking my brother and I on annual vacations to Hilton Head Island, SC about 28 years ago.  Now, 28 years is a long time to do, well …  anything.  Especially when you consider the entire island spans less than 42 square miles – you’d think we would have run out of things to do at least a  decade or so ago.

On the contrary, being in Hilton Head is like being at home especially when we get to spend a week there with my parents, my brother and sister in law and their boys.

On our drive down, we were somewhere in Kentucky I think when we saw a rainbow start forming in the sky.  Now, I have been fortunate enough to see lots of rainbows over the years, but I had never watched one form until that day.  It was really, really bright at the base then we watched as it grew into a full arch and as a second rainbow appeared above it.

We built sand castle cities then caught some waves (no surfboard required).

We found lots of new ocean-creature friends that the kids kept as “pets” for the day before releasing them back into the water.  They were fascinating to watch!

This is what it looks like when 5 of the 6 adults are very particular with their coffee (or hot tea) … no one compromises on their milk/creamer/sweetener :)

Mid-week, I needed a run – I planned on 3-4 easy miles but misjudged my estimated route and ended up with 5.25!  Luckily I didn’t run into any alligators along the way!

Gregg Russell – driving parents crazy under the Liberty Oak Tree in Harbour Town for 39 years.  Love that my kids are carrying on this tradition!  :)

Possibly my favorite thing from the whole week: A little love from one cousin to another.  {translated} “To Mason, From Drew.  Lighthouse fragile.  Not a toy.  You can put it on your dresser only!  Love you, bye.  From Me!  Remember it!”  * love *

OMG this brings back so many memories! We went to HH Island with the kids and in-laws for years. Greg Russell is still there! Ha!

Yes, Marcia! I figure he’s still raking in a pretty nice paycheck for 90 minutes of work a day! And I love hearing stories about his daughters – both out of college now – because I remember him talking about them when they were born! So funny that you used to vacation there as well – 10 years ago I was still finding people who had no idea what/where HHI was :)

  2. Oh, my gosh! So much fun!! I love South Carolina; I’m totally jealous right now. I haven’t been there in years, so I should definitely try to plan a trip, one of these days. I’m so glad y’all had such a fun time!! These memories are precious. Thanks so much for linking up with the blog; hope you’re having a great day!

You definitely need some SC time, Tara! There are so many new places to visit on HHI that I know I’m missing out when I just go back to my old favorites almost every time. But it takes all the guess work out of the planning and, with 5 kids to consider, it’s sooo much easier! Thanks for stopping by!
