TOLT: Running on Island Time

It’s no secret that I love the fall season … the leaves changing, the football games, the pumpkin-everything, the jeans and sweatshirt weather and the slow shift from summer fun to winter wonderland.  It’s its own kind of magical.

One of the very best things about fall is my kids’ Fall Break!  Because their school (and many in Indiana) are on a balanced calendar, they get a two week Fall Break that allows us to travel to South Carolina with my family for some much-needed down time at the beach!

HHI16 If you’re a new reader, you can read all about my attachment to this home away from home {here} 🙂  Basically, this has been my happy place for the past 25 years because Island Time means … frisbee on the beach …

… building sand castles

… and time with my family.

We were fortunate to be able to enjoy family time back on the Island again over Break.  Naturally, the first thing I packed were my running shoes.  The Island has miles upon miles of fantastic running and bike trails that I cannot pass up an chance to run while I’m there!

I was SO SO excited to learn that there was a race happening while we were in town.  The Hilton Head Island Bridge Run 5K/10K was celebrating their 24th year and I jumped at the chance to join them!

When you have friends who are like family also vacationing in your favorite place at the same time, it’s easy to talk one of them into running the 10K with you 🙂

HHI1See that medal Andy’s wearing … he was fast enough for third place in his age group!  Well done my friend!!

We climbed 114 steps to the top of the iconic light house

where it is super windy at the top!

And got in a few sprints on the beach

Before heading home,we celebrated my nephew’s 4th birthday, complete with ice cream cake and Star Wars light saber!

My son made this card for him … not bad for a 5 year old!

Since we’ve returned home and are back to the craziness of our daily routine, these little reminders of our time away and unplugged are good for my soul 🙂

  1. That sounds like such an amazing getaway 🙂 I’ve actually never been to the beach in the fall, but that’s how I feel about the mountains. It’s probably my favourite place to be, and I’m looking forward to the snow falling so that I can make it up there more often for snowboarding 🙂
