My Crazy Plan for 2016

Five days into January and I’m finally finishing my first post of 2016!

I have to admit, in my world of running and blogging 2015 was a year to treasure.  Some firsts, some highs (and some lows) – all critical for the “character-building” lessons learned.  Looking forward to sharing my personal/blogging goals later this week … Today I am S.U.P.E.R excite to share my 2016 Race Calendar!  I’m not exactly sure why scheduling away my Saturday mornings (for long training runs and races alike) has me so giddy, but every year it ignites the spark I need to keep myself motivated through a, generally, very long winter training season.  {This year has been an anomaly; with the exception of one rare day in mid- November, we’ve seen no snow in central Indiana worth speaking of.}

I try to vary my races each year, but I also like to run my favorite Indy events to support the our local running community.  I have officially started a “Running Bucket List” that includes races like the  Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in DC,  the Her Madison Half and Cellcom Marathon Relay in Wisconsin and Rock N Roll Half Marathons in Nashville and San Diego,  just to name a few.

Then there’s runDisney.  I was fortunate enough to run the Inaugural Glass Slipper Challenge (Half + 10K) during Princess Half Marathon Weekend in 2014 {recap} and have been trying to figure out how to get back for Marathon Weekend in January or Wine and Dine in November … or one of the new Star Wars races!!  {Only fair, since I dressed as Princess Leia for the 10K portion of the Glass Slipper Challenge, well before The Force was Awakened … or something like that.} PHM10-14All on the radar for 2017 and beyond 🙂 Please, please, please share your favorite races, especially those that offer something unique (like crossing the border into Canada or running through 4 states in one race!) so I keep growing this Bucket List! Photo Nov 28, 1 38 44 PMAs of today, my 2016 race calendar looks like this:

February 20: Indy Polar Bear 5K

March 19: Sam Costa Half Marathon

April 16: Carmel Half Marathon

May 7: 500 Festival Mini Marathon & 5K Mega Mini Challenge*  *Selected as a Race Ambassador!!  Please join me May 7th for the 40th Anniversary of the Nation’s Largest Half Marathon!  If {registering} for this race, please choose Brandi Wolf as your referring  Indy Mini ambassador

May 21: Kentucky Ale Horse Capital Half Marathon*          *Selected as a Race Ambassador!! Please join me in Lexington KY for this race’s sophomore year!  The Marathon and Half Marathon courses wind through more than 40 horse farms.  One of the most beautiful courses I’ve ever seen and incredibly well organized, especially for it’s inaugural race!  Small town feel and great age group awards!

June 11: Athleta Indiana Women’s Trail Run

September 19: Indy Women’s 5K {with my daughters}

October 1: Wine at the Line 5K

October 8: Indianapolis Half Marathon

November 5: Indianapolis Monumental Half Marathon

December 10: Indy Jingle Bell 10K

The Sam Costa and Indianapolis Half Marathons are the only brand new races for me … so far.  I have my eye on a few other new races, but will wait to see what the kids’ soccer seasons and summer activities schedule allows!

I have this crazy plan to run 100 race miles in 2016.  Which honestly didn’t sound like a lot until I started trying to add them up!  I was well over that mark last year, but several of those included virtual races which don’t count towards this site’s official tracking numbers.  Which is how I ended registering for 6 half marathons this year … I’ll let you know how that goes 🙂  12341358_10206142518535570_6595742009049804077_nIF all of the above races go as planned {no black flags this year, please!} I will have accumulated 103.7 race miles – with hopefully a few more thrown in for fun and good measure!  {My rockstar running friend Trena ran 532 race miles last year, including Boston and Twin Cities Marathons and a 50 mile Ultra…suddenly 100 doesn’t sound so bad!}

What are your running/fitness/healthy lifestyle goals of 2016?

  1. Get it girly!!!

Congrats on your race ambassadorships…so exciting isn’t it 🙂

You schedule looks packed but totally doable (I think).

The Kentucky race sounds AWESOME…it’s my hubby’s bday so he would not go for me being away and running a race (how rude-lol!)

Good luck this year! You got this!

Oh and for the record 100 racing miles is a great accomplishment!! IJS 🙂

Tamieka – last year there was a craft beer festival in Lexington the same weekend. Just sayin’ maybe hubby wants to go along for the trip…and the beer! Plus the race is sponsored by Kentucky Ale, and the blueberry wheat beer was fantastic 😉

      1. ooooh good sell. Just read you message to him and he laughed -lol! But he does have a cousin in Kentucky …..I will keep you posted 🙂

        1. Java & Sole says:

Definitely let me know if you end up in Lexington this May 🙂 A fun birthday weekend destination to see the cousin…sounds like a great plan!

  2. Jen says:

Some of the sms spinoff group are doing the Nashville rock and roll this year if you want to join and throw it in your calendar! Way to go on the 100 race mile goal!

    1. javaandsole says:

Jen, I’m pretty sure Nashville RNR is the same weekend as Carmel, which is my “practice race” for the mini 🙂 But this just means you are coming back with a full report for me right??

How awesome to be an Indy race Ambassador!! You’ve got a really exciting year planned. Hope to see you at Monumental. Thanks for linking up!

    1. javaandsole says:

Marcia! You will Love Monumental, we’ll coordinate a meet up closer to the race – I was online by 12:15am signing up on New Year’s Day, and it would have been sooner but we were putting the kids to bed 🙂 IU has their Little 500 the same weekend as the Mini Marathon I think – maybe a good time for visit?

  4. What an awesome race calendar! I find planning out my race calendar to be fun as well- I have a half marathon and a few 5k’s that I’ve committed to so far but need to work on adding more to it!

    1. Java & Sole says:

Annmarie – if you need to add a race in the midwest, I have plenty of recommendations! Just depends on the time of year you can travel…Indy Mini and Indy Monumental are my favorite local (to Indianapolis) races, but The Flying Pig in Cincinnati and the Horse Capital Half or Full in Lexington are also great choices – good course/spectator support – but have a completely different feel 🙂

  5. Wow! That is quite a plan, but it sounds like you’ve got it! I LOVE Disney races too and hope to get back to running one soon!

    1. Java & Sole says:

Julie – I need a plan to stay motivated, especially in the winter! This just makes all those dark thirty training runs in the snow and cold worth it! I love Disney – it’s the best 🙂

  6. I forgot that you are in IN-my daughter is at IU Bloomington heading back today. I’d love to do a race in Indianappolis some time if you know of any good ones. I am doing Cherry Blossom too perhaps we can do a meet up. Great goals

    1. Java & Sole says:

Hey Deborah! If you’re looking for *the* iconic Indy race, it’s the Mini Marathon in May, celebrating it’s 40th anniversary this year (along with the 100th running of the Indy 500!) This year they are also offering a Challenge (sort of Disney-esque if you will) that allows you to run the 5K and the Half back to back on race day to earn a bonus medal and shirt, in addition to the individual ones you would get for each races separately. So if you’re looking for more bling for your buck – the Mega Mini Challege is for you 🙂 I also LOVE the Indy Monumental Half Marathon in November (and have heard the course for the full is even prettier). Definitely let me know if you register for an Indy race! I can’t do Cherry Blossom this year, but it’s on “the list” for 2017 and beyond!

  7. Renee says:

That looks like a great race calendar for 2016! Good Luck yo you!

    1. Java & Sole says:

Thanks so much! And thanks for stopping by Renee!

  8. Summer says:

I love that you posted these so I can fill in my calendar 😉

    1. Java & Sole says:

Register away my friend …we’ve got lots of goals this year, but only one at the top of the list! #sub2crew

  9. Your races for the year sound great! Gosh, I’d love to run with the horses one day, I’ll have to keep an eye on Kentucky for 2017! 100 race miles is a great goal!

  10. Tara says:

Fun list! That trail race looks great (I mean, it’s sponsored by Athleta, how could it not be!) Good luck with these goals!

    1. Java & Sole says:

Tara – you should know that’s the only reason I agreed to run a trail run in the first place! Truly, any race sponsored by Athleta (packet pickup is in store – Bonus!) and hands out cupcakes at the finish line is my kind of fun! Thanks for stopping by!

  11. I’m addicted to races LOL, so I refuse to think about how many race miles I’ll be running. I don’t have an Indiana race yet, hmm….

    1. Java & Sole says:

Erika – now I kinda want to know how many race miles you ran in 2015, just because! I love racing but find that my kids’ activities schedules keep getting in the way of the most fun ones! 🙂 It’s not *too* far of a drive from DC … I feel an Indy Mini Marathon or Monumental Marathon in your very near future!!

  12. This is an awesome race calendar! Very exciting! I’m in Disney now and it’s THE BEST! I’m also looking forward to the Brooklyn Half and the NYC Marathon 🙂

    1. Java & Sole says:

Disney is for real the rock star of probably any other race I’ve done – but certainly excited to expand my race horizons over the next few years 🙂 I will have to look into the Brooklyn Half – I’ve love to do a race in NYC, but all the “best” ones are fulls and I honestly don’t have time to train for a full at this point in my life – maybe when the littles are all a little older!

  13. sherry says:

Great plan, Brandi. I hope to be able to join you on a few of these!

    1. Java & Sole says:

Sherry – I am SO excited you are back at it! Training for the Mini and more, right?? 2016 has great things in store for you, sweet friend!
