Fun & Freezing Donut 5K

Remember last week when I joked that we should have just worn our bathing suits to the Jingle Bell Run since it was almost 70*?  Nevermind that it was mid-December in the Midwest …Photo Dec 19, 10 59 42 AMWell the heat wave didn’t continue through this past weekend.  The sunshine is deceiving … it was freeeeezing the entire time!

Six weeks ago, at the IMM expo, Summer and I signed our kids up to run the Jack’s Donuts Donut 5K benefiting local animal shelters because it was only $10 for kids and $15 for adults!Photo Dec 19, 11 00 13 AMLove the smell of fresh donuts in the morning!Photo Dec 19, 11 00 28 AMThe first 1,000 registrants received a “Donut Me” stocking cap and everyone received a cute cotton t-shirt. Photo Dec 19, 11 07 56 AMOh, and there were donut holes at every mile marker.  Talk about motivation.  We just knew the kids would love this race … Photo Dec 19, 10 59 56 AMWhat we didn’t know is how cold it would be.  {I know, I really should have expected this …}Photo Dec 19, 11 00 01 AMThe wind chill was 7* when I woke up Saturday morning.  It would be in the low 20’s by 9am when the race started.  So I asked them if they still wanted to run.  Two of the three bailed … but this one was a trooper!!  Photo Dec 19, 11 32 07 AMIf it had been warmer, they would have all run, but I decided this was a “pick your battles” moment and I wasn’t prepared to field complaints for 3 miles ;) Photo Dec 19, 11 00 23 AMBundled up to our noses and pumped full of donuts, we had another memorable run with our kids. Photo Dec 19, 11 00 40 AMPhoto Dec 19, 8 26 19 AMWould you believe that Summer had ordered this adorable “Donut Stop Running” tank weeks ago and received it just days before our run.  Talk about sweet timing … and the perfect photo op! Photo Dec 19, 10 52 03 AM

Gotta start them early right :) I do love that we can “run” with the kids – #raisingrunners is one of the best jobs ever!

  2. This sounds like a SUPER fun race! Donut holes at each mile?? Yes please! The kids look like they had a great time!

    1. Java & Sole says:

Yes! The kids would start sprinting as soon as they saw the “aid” stations ahead. I can’t believe they could still sprint by the end after stuffing their faces the first two miles :)

  3. Sounds like a fun family run! Good thing it was only a 5k. Could you imagine having a donut run at a half or a full and eating them every mile….haha. Congrats on the finish!

HA! Actually, my BRF Summer and I did the Santa Hustle a few years ago and they had hot chocolate, M&M’s and cookies at all the aid stations – I was so sick by the end of that race! Maybe not the best idea to eat at EVERY mile marker :) But so fun!

      1. Java & Sole says:

I should clarify – the Santa Hustle is a half – so lots of treats!
